William H. Davies (1871 to 1940) William H. Davies was a Welsh poet and writer. He spent a significant part of his life as a tramp or hobo in the United Kingdom and the United States. He became a peddler and street singer in England. After several years of wandering life, he published his first volume, ‘The Soul’s Destroyer and other Poems’.

The poem tells us about the rich man who wants to be a poor man to find real happiness. It is when we do not have money or have lost our money; we realize how important money is. In the end, the poet says that now he doesn’t have money, but he has true friends though they may be few.

Explanation:

The poem is about what is real happiness in life. The poet mentions that happiness will not buy money. Real happiness is in poor life because if we have money, our friends are not real, they come to us only for money.

At the beginning of the poem, the poet tells that when he had money that times he knew that there was no real joy or happiness till he went poor because when he had money that time poet has many friends and they come all day knocking at the poet’s door but they were all false because they only came to the poet for money.

When the poet felt that all his friends were false and they used to come to the poet only because the poet had money then he felt like a child that holds a trumpet that he must not blow because he knows a man is dead. The same thing the poet felt was that his friends were false that time he dared not to speak to them that the poet knew they all were false and he decided not to let know this false world.

The third stanza:

The poet tells that he has much thought of life means he has had great experiences in life he has seen so many things in life how poor men have always been happy by their hearts, how their wives hum like bees by all their work from morning till night. The poet tells us how poor men’s wives always are happy they do not make any complaints in their life and all work hard from morning till night.

The fourth stanza:

The poet compares poor and rich men. So when the poet hears these poor men are always laughing and happy because of what they have they are happy but where the rich men are always sad, and frown whether they have all things in their life. the poet thinks that poor men need not go up and become rich because they are happy and content in their life but the poet suggests rich men that they should come down for their greed and live the happy life as the poor ones.

The fifth Stanza:

In the last stanza, the poet tells his past and present condition about being rich and poor. The poet talks about when he had money that times his many friends proved they were not true friends because they used to come to the poet for his money purpose. Now in present, the poet has no money but he has real friends though they are very few.

The poem Money is about the real happiness we should find in real friends. Money is the things by which we only buy things but happiness, and real friends we cannot buy with money. If we are happy by hearts, we are rich. But rich people always have greed for money but poor people always find happiness in their work and their true friends though they are very few.

I am truly inspired by the poet’s thoughts and I like the poem very much. I learn from the poem that real happiness is not in money but real friends. As poor people are always happy in their life they need not grow rich and as rich people, they should be always going down to find happiness in real friends.
