The 12 Basic English Tenses Learn Grammar

Dear Students, Are you learning the English language? IF you want to learn the English language effectively and use the English language in your daily communication, you must learn the Tense and its 12 basic types. With this article, you will learn what is tense and 12 basic types of tense, and the importance of tense in communication.

First of all, we have to learn what is tense and then The 12 Basic English Tenses.

What is tense?

  • The stage of action is called Tense.
  • The situation of action is called Tense

In the grammatical language, the stage of action, in which situation the action does happen’ when the action takes place is called Tense.

Three main types of Tense:

  • Present Tense
  • Past Tense
  • Future Tense

Present Tense: The action taken in day-to-day life it’s called Present Tense.

Past Tense: The action is over or done in past it’s called Past Tense.

Future Tense: The action will be done in the future it’s called Future Tense.

Four Sub Types of Basic Tense:

  1. Simple tense
  2. Continuous Tense 
  3. Perfect Tense
  4. Perfect Continuous Tense
  • Simple Tense: In this Stage of action simple action takes place or happens that’s why it’s called Simple Tense.
  • Continuous Tense:  the action which is going on or was going on or will be going on is called Continuous Tense.
  • Perfect Tense: The action that has been done, had done, or will have done is called Perfect Tense.
  • Perfect Continuous Tense: The action has been going on or had been going on or will have been going on its called Perfect Continuous Tense.

The 12 Basic English Tenses

Present Tense:

  1. Simple Present Tense
  2. Continuous Present Tense
  3. Perfect Present Tense
  4. Perfect Continuous Present Tense

Past Tense:

  1. Simple Past Tense
  2. Continuous Past Tense
  3. Perfect Past Tense
  4. Perfect Continuous Past Tense

Future Tense:

  1. Simple Future Tense
  2. Continuous Future Tense
  3. Perfect Future Tense
  4. Perfect Continuous future Tense

Let’s learn the 12 Basic English Tenses in detail:

Present Tense:

  • The present tense is a tense where we speak or tell about our today’s action or present action.
  1. Simple Present Tense
  2. Continuous Present Tense
  3. Perfect Present Tense
  4. Perfect Continuous Present Tense

Simple Present Tense

In simple present Tense we speak or tell about our day today’s action;

Universal truth sentence eg: Sun rises in the east.

Habitual action eg: I like to sing

Our daily routine

Formula of simple present tense:    

    Subject + Verb1s/es + Object 

Eg: I play football, He goes to school.

Note: If in the Simple present tense, the subject is a third person or third person  pronoun we have to add s/es to the verb.

Continuous Present Tense

  • The action is going on or continues in a present situation its called continuous present tense. 
  • The formula of the continuous present tense:    

Subject + am, is, are + Verb1– ing + Object

Eg: I am playing.

We are going to vocation.

He is reading a newspaper.

Iam + Verb1– ing
He, She, It, Singular Nounis + Verb1– ing
We, you, Plural Nounare + Verb1– ing

Perfect Present Tense:

  • The action is just completed or over or finished in the present situation it’s called perfect present tense.
  • The formula of the continuous present tense:

       Subject + have/has + Verb3 + Object

He, She, It, Singular Nounhas + V3
We, you, Plural Nounhave + V3
  • When the subject is singular we have to use Has as an auxiliary verb.
  • When the subject is plural we have to use Have as an auxiliary verb.
  • If the subject is the third-person pronoun He, She, It. we have to use Has as an auxiliary verb.

Perfect Continuous Present Tense:

  • The action is started and still going on in the present tense it’s called Perfect Continuous Present Tense.
  • The formula for Perfect continuous present tense:
    Subject + have/has +been+ Verb3 + Object      
  • Eg: I have been writing my home work.

      He has been reading a book

Past Tense: It’s types: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous Tense.

Future Tense: It’s types: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous Tense.
